22 Rajab: The concept of Nazr in Islam (Koonday) In the name of Allah, the beneficent the merciful. The word NAZR is an Arabic word which means "an offering," in its verbal form it will mean "to offer" or "to make a spiritual vow." Note that NAZR is used in Arabic in a totally different meaning also - "to warn," that is not in this context. Therefore, we leave that for the time. The Glorious Qur'an has used the word "NAZR" in both meanings. We will only discuss here the first usage, i.e., which is relevant to our discussion here. Sometimes the word NIAZ is also used in this context. This is a word from Farsi which means "need," and it is its metaphorical use in the sense of an offering. The basic concept of NAZR is to offer something less valuable in the hope and expectation of receiving something of higher value. The "value" does not have to be material; it could just be honor and dignity. The e...

THE DAY OF QIYAMA

THE DAY OF QIYAMA It is an event which concerns everything and all mankind. The whole universe enters a new stage, life and system. The Qur'an tells us that this event will coincide with the extinction of the sun and the stars, the drying up of the seas, the levelling of high and low lands, the disintegration of mountains, universal earthquakes and a great transformation. The whole world will move towards destruction and everything will be annihilated. This will be followed by resurrection. The Prophet (S.A.W.) has said: "Whenever you see the season of Spring, remember resurrection." In other words, the rebirth in Spring of the plants is an example of resurrection. If there were no resurrection, eternal life, Janna and Jahannam; then creation would be futile and vain and it would be unjust of God. Allah is neither unjust, nor does He create in vain. It will be the day of assembly, encounter, accounting and compensation. According to the Qur'an and the ahadi...

Prostration of Forgetfulness

Bismillah Hir Rahmaan Nir Raheem Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatuallahi wa barakatuhu Prostration of Forgetfulness Sujud-al-Sahu Two Types Ibn Mas'ood, may Allaah be pleased with him, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed either an extraneous addition or missed an essential part of the prayer (one of the narrators of the hadeeth was in doubt which). After saying 'salaam,' it was said to him, "Oh Prophet of Allaah, has there been a new change in [the way of performing] the prayer?" He replied, "Why [would you say that]?" They responded, "You prayed in such and such manner." So he bent his legs and faced towards the qiblah and performed two prostrations then performed tasleem (saying 'salaam' to the right then the left). After facing towards us, he said, "If something new had been introduced regarding the prayers, I would have informed you about it. To the contrary, I am but a human like you—I forget as you forget, so if I ...

24th Rajab - Battle of Khyber

24th of Rajab marks the anniversary of the victory of Islam against the Jews in the battle of Khyber. This battle was fought in the 7th Hijrah. Background ========== Khyber was a locality at a distance of about 96 Kms from Madina. It consisted of eight (or ten) popular and very strong forts where the Jews lived and also gave refuge to the enemies of Islam. They had become an active center of conspiracies against Islam. In the 7th Hijrah, our Holy Prophet Mohammad(sawaw) got information about the conspiracy being hatched by the Jews against Muslims in connivance with other hostile elements of Islam. He(sawaw) decided to take on the challenge. Preparation for War =================== In a consultative meeting, it was decided by the Muslims to take on the enemy outside Madina. A force of 1,400 muslim fighters (History of Muslims of the World by K.A.Hameed) set out of Madina to protect themselves and their homeland against a Jewish force of more than 14,000 fighters (Allama Tabrisi). Before...

Take not for intimates others than your own folk, who would spare no pains to ruin you; they love to hamper you. Hatred is revealed by (the utterance of) their mouths, but that which their breasts hide is greater. We have made plain for you the revelations if ye will understand. [ Pooya/Ali Commentary 3:118 ] Please refer to verse 28 of Ali Imran. The believers are warned not to make friends with the enemies of Islam, their associates and relatives. Tolerance is desirable only when it is known that there is no joining of hands to launch an offensive against the true faith. It is a wise maxim to preserve the faith from the contaminating influence of impi...
